ColorBlind Internship-February 2009

The Week of February 2-8 (Total: 6 hours)

Friday, February 6-Went over details of the budget for "Lost Voices" so that we could begin writing grants and applying for fiscal sponsorship. Started the process to make "Lost Voices" an LLC through the state of Colorado. Continued to work through ideas for "Lost Voices" feature length treatment and looked at the treatment for a documentary called "The Will to Survive."
(7-11pm, 4 hours)

Earlier in the day, I attended a Production meeting for ColorBlind Productions. We talked through what projects I would be working on for the internship and how I would accomplish them. (12-2pm, 2 hours)

The Week of February 9-15 (Total: 9.5 hours)

Friday, February 13-Meeting with Shaunya concerning progress on "Lost Voices" (ColorBlind Productions meeting). (12-1:30pm, 1.5 hours)

Saturday, February 14-Looked into specific Organizations that could be a non-profit fiscal sponsor for "Lost Voices" and which organization would be the best fit. I compared the Independent Documentary Association, which sponsors at least 90% of the projects that are submitted to them. IDA has a rolling deadline and takes about 6-8 weeks to process the application. IDA seems like the best fit for "Lost Voices." Our 2nd and 3rd choices are Women Makes Movies and I.F.P. IFP is also a rolling deadline for the application submission process and I will be working on the May 15 deadline for WMM. I called a student, Devon, who said he would like to volunteer as a PA on our shoot days and talked to him about his availability and what he would like to learn on our shoot days. I sent an email of questions to Richard Dalton asking who might be best suited to be a therapeutic advisor during filming and why. (12- 8:30pm, 8 hours)

The Week of March 16-22 (Total: 6 hours)

Saturday, February 21-I spent time  with Paige Evans, she is editing an independent feature length movie titled, "Buckaroo." She works with Shaunya Boddie as an editor and consultant on some of Shaunya's productions. I spent six hours with her. She demonstrated how she made certain emotional cuts and why she added music to certain sequences. She showed me footage that she used that wasn't in the script as transitional scenes and as relational development scenes. In one of these scenes, Jerome and Sir, take their horses into a watering hole to cool off. Sir, Jerome's mentor, is pulled into the water by Jerome and they have an animated water fight. Even though this scene isn't in the script, the improv builds a tighter bond between the two and helps advance the plot and their relationship. I helped Paige build some Title credits in Motion. She showed me how to place them at different beats in the music, what portion of the beginning shot to black and not affect the narrative. We discussed the stress of being responsible to edit a feature film, since all I have edited are 10-minute short films. (10am-4pm, 6 hours)

The Week of February 23-March 1, 2009 (Total: 10 hours)

To prepare to submit a twenty-minute sizzle reel to Sundance on "Lost Voices," Shaunya asked me to go through and thoroughly log all of the interviews, artwork and B-roll we have already filmed. I made detailed notes on the questions and answers were covered in three interviews, Richard Dalton, me and Steph Ault. I described all of the artwork and movements of the camera as we captured the artwork. I reviewed all of the B-roll that we have obtained so far and made notes in FCP. This is so that we know exactly what we have and what we still need to film.
Saturday, February 28 (11am-4pm, 5 hours)
Sunday, February 29 (1pm-6pm, 5 hours)
